Welcome

Welcome to the

Hoʻopai

Archaeology

Apprenticeship

Historic preservation in Hawaiʻi requires the balance of traditional thought and modern technologies. The Hoʻopai Archaeology Apprenticeship is a vocational opportunity to learn archaeology through a Hawaiian lens and be equipped with the skills to protect, preserve and document Hawaiʻi’s historic sites. Through historical studies and hands-on field experience, our goal is for this program to provide ready and available individuals to properly manage and conduct restoration of historic properties.

The program will include class room time followed by field work. In partnership with Mākena Golf & Beach Club, the first year of the Hoʻopai Archaeology Apprenticeship program will take place on its south Maui lands. Located south of Wailea and abutting Maui’s Oneloa beach and protected parklands, the Mākena Resort site sits on the makai slopes of leeward Haleakalā, buffeted by Pu‘u Ōla‘i and historic Mākena Landing.

The name Hoʻopai derives from the word pai, which means to urge, to encourage, and to excite. We want to urge and encourage those who join the apprenticeship to see beyond normal academic perceptions, and we want to stir up excitement about preserving our ʻāina.

Among the other definitions of the word pai, is the name of a native fern, or scientifically, Adenophorus hymenophylloides. This particular fern grows off of trees, off of the kumu lāʻau. The word kumu has multiple meanings as well, some definitions being the source, the foundation, and the purpose. The pai fern grows from the tree for it is dependent upon it.

Similarly, in archaeology we are required to constantly connect what is seen now to our history, which is the source and foundation of our knowledge today. Like the pai fern, we are dependent upon our kumu. With these thoughts, we see Hoʻopai as a catalyst to nurture an individual’s growth, but to also deepen their roots to Hawaiʻi.

Mākena Golf and Beach Club

Mākena has served as a focal point of South Maui for generations. From early pre-contact settlements, to the economic ‘boom’ times of the plantation and paniolo eras, to the growth of tourism following World War II, Mākena and the surrounding lands of Honuaʻula have provided a hardy leeward landscape that has sustained resilient Mākena families for generations. Inspired by timeless Hawaiian practices of living in balance with the natural surroundings, we continue to celebrate the deep connection these families have to Mākena and join them in taking responsibility to care for this precious land and ocean.
